Its finally time! New year, new stuff! My new years resolution is to make myself better know, or at least to put myself and my work out there. So now it is time to add all my new work to my portfolio and give it a complete makeover. Its time to move away from the passive attitude I have had for a long time and become more confident in myself. Along with the changes I will be making, I will also be posting a blog post every week from now on. Like I have said in the past, this blog is a way for me to show my own growth, and taking responsibility for this is the first step towards a greater goal.

If I had the chance to earn a professional certification at school, I would definitely use it to my advantage. However, If I were to pursue game art and design as a career (which very well may happen), I don’t think it would be very helpful for me to find a job. That said, it may be helpful, but I don’t know enough about how it works in order to tell that for myself. From what I can speculate on what I do know about a professional certification, it seems that they function better for a student who wants to go deeper into their topic and pursue the higher jobs in that field, like becoming a full game designer. I will say that it would be nice for me to become a game designer, and I already have a lot of ideas that I would love to see being used, but I think my main interests are in the art aspects of designing a game. Personally, I think that the professional certification would not really help me that much with finding a career in that area.
On Friday, we were doing the Hour of Code in class to both better our understanding of the coding language as well as improve our current skills in coding. Some people in our class had no experience in coding at all, so this was completely new to them in more ways than one. I however had somewhat of a rudimentary knowledge of coding beforehand, so I was already familiar with how it all worked. The program we used was pretty basic and easy to follow. Early on, I was really able to understand how much math is involved in coding and how one wrong calculation could mess up the entire outcome. Say if you wanted to make a sprite move into a box that was 300 pixels away (having blockades on either side of the sprite arranged in a maze-like pattern) you would have to enter the correct digits and turns in order to get him across. This experience helped prepare me for more advanced programming by giving me a better understanding about how coding works and the language used in coding. Now that I have the basics of the programming language, I can more easily pick up on the harder stuff than someone that has never coded before in their lives. This experience has also inspired me to continue my learning specifically of the coding language so I will be able to start on an actual game as soon as possible.
On friday, we had the privilege to attend the US2020 Game and IT expo at the triangle research park center, While we were there, we were able to learn quite a bit about games, the game industry, the different software and hardware available, and background info on different IT companies. There were a couple of people that stood out to me in this expo, such as Red Storm and Total cinema 360. Total Cinema 360 had an interactive display with an oculus device. There, I was able to observe the advancement of virtual reality, a topic that interests me personally. At the Red Storm booth, i was able to get some valuable information about career choices for the game industry and what is looked for when looking at a resume. One thing I could not really find much about was information on the local game industries. Redstorm talked a bit about local opportunities, but not as much as I had hoped. On the terms of informational technology, there was a both that talked about strapping monitoring devices to rescue animals in order to track their condition, which would allow them to be able to tell if the animal has found anything faster. This technology could be used in many situations like in fires or while searching for victims of a natural disaster. Overall, this experience was very educational and helped me better understand the game industry and the developing technology of this generation. I must also thank my Game design teacher for taking us on this fun and educational expo. Thank you Mr. B!
